Tonight I got to play with my favourite guitarist, Roger Plant, at Gorge-ous Coffee – a little coffee shop on the corner of Gorge Rd & Tillicum. For those who have never been there it’s quite different from the usual lounge or restaurant gigs I do…
Before you start they move all the chairs and sofas around into a theatre seating arrangement. People come mainly to listen to the the music. What is really great about this is that they are paying attention. You look into their faces and you can see what the music is doing… in my case… some of the time… almost helping them drift off to sleep.
It was a great experience. I got to tell some stories (I love telling stories… I’m told I am a good story teller) and share the reason some of these songs are special to me. My friend Dave Gallant stopped by and we got him to come up and play guitar and sing a couple of songs which gave me a chance to play sax behind him and Roger. This was especially great because on Tuesday I had an awesome sax lesson from Canada’s premier tenor sax player, Gene Hardy… and I got to just close my eyes and play, keeping in mind some of the great advice he gave me.
There is something magical about playing music with other musicians especially when they are your friends and being able to share that with an audience who either came as our friends or became our friends because of the shared musical experience.
Thanks to everyone who showed up at Gorge-ous Coffee tonight. It was a memorable evening.
